On
Wednesday, Federation and AIPAC teamed up to host a joint event at
Congregation Beth Israel featuring famed Israeli author of My Promised Land:
The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel and Ha’Aretz political commentator
Ari Shavit.
Close to
500 community members packed the pews to hear Shavit’s take on the Gaza conflict, the US-Israel
relationship, raising children under the shadow of rocket fire, and the future
of Zionism. Aptly described by AIPAC Area Director Elliott Nahmias as, “a
leftist righty, or maybe a righty leftist”, Shavit gave everyone in attendance
something to cheer - and grumble - about. He reminisced about the time he spent as a child
in La Jolla with prominent community members Zelda (z”l) and Murray (z”l)
Goodman. He spoke about the remarkable similarities between Israel and
California’s beaches, oranges, hi-tech industry, weather and people.
Overall,
the collaboration between AIPAC, Congregation Beth Israel, and Federation
created a wonderful evening
for people of all political persuasions to mingle, learn, and engage in tough
questions about Israel.
